| Livespeakr Features
| Speakers expand, contract, and rotate to work in both portrait and landscape orientations. |
| Why Livespeakr? The Livespeakr utilizes a powerful internal rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery with an average lifespan of 14-16 hours as well as an AC adapter to make this one of the most convenient sound systems on the market today. With Livespeakr, you can say goodbye to purchasing AA or AAA batteries. |
How it Works: The 3-Click System
Click 1: Simply slide the media player into the Livespeakr; the speakers are stored and hidden behind the unit for maximum portability.
Click 2: Give the unit a gentle rotation, and the Livespeakr rotates 90 degrees to rest in the vertical or portrait position. You'll receive tactile feedback by feeling and hearing a click.
Click 3: Another twist will turn the unit another 90 degrees; the speakers will expand and the unit will click into place. The Livespeakr is now in landscape mode for viewing all of your multimedia files. Simply reverse these clicks to put the Livespeakr back into storage.
Will Livespeakr Charge My iPod?
Livespeakr connects using the headphone jack; therefore, it does not charge your iPhone or iPod.
NOTE: Livespeakr does not include an iPhone, iPod, or iPod touch. You must remove any external cases you have on your iPhone/iPod to interact with Livespeakr.

So the manufacturer recommended that you let the battery run out before you recharge it for the first time, and I did just that. The speakers were working great and lasted for two days before I decided to recharge it... then after the initial recharge the speakers would randomly turn off after 1-7 minutes and then would occasionally not turn back on for another 1-15 minutes. I tried charging it for 1 hours, then 2, then finally 4. Then I ended up taking it apart and the battery tested fine, so I replaced the wires and now it works. It's a decent product overall... if you get one that isn't defective.

With something this small, good sound quality is going to be difficult to achieve. However, I found the sound quality to be more than adequate, but not overly impressive. What I did like about this is the way it cradles the iPod providing protection as well as sound, which is great especially for kids and teenagers. I'm not a huge fan of kids with headphones because they often like to listen to their headphones at high volumes, and this provides a good sound solution making headphones unnecessary. The stand at the back is very well thought out and sturdy, and I love the way the speakers extend when using the iPod in landscape mode. Unlike another reviewer that found the speakers were difficult to extend, I had no problems at all - they glide out easily and retract easily. I commend Livespeakr for making this speaker system rechargeable! The only downside is that this is NOT an iPod charging dock. You will still need to charge your iPod independently from this since the connection between this and the iPod is through the headphone jack.

All three of us have pretty picky ears, and we all liked the sound quality. Keep in mind, this is a *small* unit. It is suitable for use in an office or kitchen, but not outdoors or in a big living room.
We ended up returning it because it is not compatible with iPod Nano. Which is too bad, because for a few pennies more they could have modified their plastic mounting plate to hold the Nano. Double sticky tape would work, but that was too funky for us.
The instructions are *terrible* ! They look nice, in color with good headings, but everything you need to know is missing. The plastic in the unit is lightweight (read: "flimsy") so you want to handle it g-e-n-t-l-y ! (Not good for kids who drop things.) But you have to use quite a bit of force to (1) open the stand, and (2) slide the speakers apart, and (3) remove the iPod mounting plate so you can reverse the direction of the audio cord. They don't even TELL you that you can reverse the direction of the cord, so it looks like you have to install your iPod upside down or backwards (see other reviewers who say this). So, without clear instructions, you are pretty sure you are about to break the thing, which we figured we would do, but it turns out that with six hands and three brains and 45 minutes, we manage to NOT break it, and figure it out. Mostly. The lack of instruction is a much bigger problem than most people would guess, on a product so simple. Pictures would have helped. A lot. One star, or zero stars, for instructions and ease of use.
The packaging is rather elegant. There is a small magnet in the box so you can use the box easily to safely transport the unit, or ship it again. It comes with a little protective bag, and a power cord, although they are hidden in the bottom and we nearly threw them out (again, no instructions). I think it is very compact for the sound quality. Good for a small apartment or college student, perhaps.
The unit will *NOT* charge your iPod, which is too bad, because they ALMOST have the right cables and adapters, but not quite. A little more thought, or maybe designed in the US (sorry!) and it would have been a great product.
Finally, there are a zillion iPod/nano/classic/1G/2G/3G/4G/5G/touch/iPhone models from Apple in use. The manufacturers or Amazon (hello!) should have a visual chart of which iPods will work, and WHICH ONES WILL NOT WORK. Nobody knows what they have. Like, for example,"2GB" on the back of your iPod does *NOT* mean it is "2G." Don't believe "universal" or "super" adapters. We want specifics.

The Livespeakr is an attractive little rechargeable portable iPod speaker system. It can be powered via internal battery, USB port, or an AC outlet. The Livespeakr comes with a draw-string soft velour carrying case, full color illustrated fold-out user guide, mini-USB cable, and USB to AC adapter cube. The mini-USB cable plugs into standard USB ports on your computer or the included AC adapter. The Livespeakr can be played and charged via USB or AC. There is a charge status indicator light on the AC adapter that changes from red to green when fully charged. The Livespeakr can be used while it is charging. The speaker system ships in an attractive re-usable box with magnetic closures. The Livespeakr is relatively small and light. It comes in either white or black. I have the white version. Unlike most iPod speaker sets, there is no proprietary iPod dock connector on the Livespeakr. You connect the Livespeakr to the earphone jack of the iPod, meaning the iPod can neither be controlled nor charged through the Livespeakr. All controls (volume, song selection, even powering iPod on/off), are performed on the iPod itself. There is a power button on the Livespeakr that powers the speakers on/off. Both the Livespeakr and iPod must be powered on/off separately. Because it connects via the earphone port, instead of a proprietary iPod dock, the Livespeakr theoretically works with any iPod or MP3 player. However, the Livespeakr's "super" cradle will only accommodate the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPod Classic (without cases). I tested with an iPod Classic and 3G Touch. Both models fit the cradle without requiring special adapters. The Classic fit a bit more snug in the cradle than the Touch, but wasn't overly tight. I had no problems inserting or removing either iPod from the cradle and both felt secure in the cradle during use, even when making adjustments using the iPod Touch screen or Classic's click wheel. After securing your iPod in the cradle, plugging the Livespeakr cable into the iPod's earphone jack, powering on both the Livespeakr and your iPod, you're ready to go. The Livespeakr's earphone cable is located at the top of the cradle by default. This works fine with the Classic due to the Classic's top-mounted earphone jack. However, the earphone jack for the iPod Touch is located on the bottom . You must re-route the Livespeakr earphone cable before you can use it with the Touch. Fortunately, this is a quick simple procedure and clear instructions are provided. You can also use the iPod Touch or iPhone in landscape mode. When you rotate the cradle counter-clockwise to landscape mode, the speakers automatically extend beyond the iPod. As I stated, the unit has a built-in rechargeable battery. Battery life seems pretty good. I've gotten at least ten hours of use between charges, even without charging the Livespeakr to full capacity at times.
Sound quality is very impressive. When I first removed the Livespeakr from the box, I didn't have overly ambitous expectations, because it was so small and light. Then I connected my iPod and quickly learned otherwise. Although the low end is virtually non-existant, the highs and mid-ranges were very good. It sounds clearer than another (and larger) iPod speaker system that I own. The sounds were crisp and clear, never muffled or distorted. I've run through a couple hundred songs, from different genres and encoded at various bit rates. It handled all with no problem. You can also tweak the sound with the iPod's built-in equalizer. Probably, the only caveat is that you must set the volume on your iPod above 50% to hear any acceptable sound from the Livespeaker (this is even documented in the user guide). Even after setting the appropriate minimum volume on your iPod, you still have a nice range between minimum and maximum. These little speakers can actually get pretty loud. Even at max volumes, they are still very good at fighting off distortion.
This little speaker system offers a lot of bang for the buck. Great sound quality (especially given the small size), sturdy construction, easy usability, portability, and even little tangibles, like magnetic shielding, (which allows me to breath a sigh of relief when using the speakers with my hard drive powered Classic), make this a very strong contender among iPod speaker systems. It's perfect for an office, dorm room, or anywhere else space is limited. It may not have the best (or any) deep bass performance, (I highly doubt anyone would purchase a tiny portable speaker system like this expecting to rattle windows anyway), or be the absolute best sounding or performing iPod speaker system out there. However, it performs its intended purpose, ( decent sounding, ultra-portable, cordless speakers), admirably.

I got this for the new iPhone 3GS and was disappointed. It has RF Shielding, yes, but not GSM shielding. This problem goes away if I put it in airplane mode, which is fine if you are watching movies, playing games, or listening to your iTunes. Or if you don't mind missing your phone calls. But I like to listen to Pandora (which requires a connection) and get my phone calls. If you monkey around with cable placement occasionally, it will not give off that annoying GSM feedback 75% of the time. However, the buzzing noise you get 25% of the time is annoying. Which is why I give it 2 stars.
